When Disney and Lucasfilm earlier this year announced that the animated series “Star Wars The Clone Wars” would not be returning after five seasons you had to figure a new and different animated show wouldn’t be far behind.
Disney announced “Star Wars Rebels” will be premiering in the fall of 2014. The new animated series will explore the Star Wars universe during the decades that separate “Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” and “Stars Wars Episode IV: A New Hope”. Where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is beginning to taking shape.
Simon Kinberg will write the premiere episode and serve as executive producer for the series. Simon has written screenplays for such movies as “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”, “Sherlock Holmes” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past”. Dave Filoni, who was the supervising director for “The Clone Wars,” will also serve as an executive producer on the new series, as will Greg Weisman, who produced the animated shows “The Spectacular Spider-Man” and “Young Justice”.
The series will kick off its debut in the fall of 2014 on the Disney Channel, and then move to Disney XD.
Rumor has it that actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers of “The Tudors” has been cast in a major role for Star Wars: Episode VII. Meyers has worked with J.J. Abrams before on the movie “Mission: Impossible III”. No word for sure if this is accurate. Abrams is known for being very tight lipped on movies he’s directing.
