In a stunning move on Thursday, Warner Brothers announced that Ben Affleck will don the cape and cowl as the next Batman in the upcoming sequel to “Man of Steel.”
This comes just weeks after it was rumored that Warner Brothers was possibly looking at Josh Brolin or even Ryan Gosling to step in to the role as the cape crusader. Warner Brothers had let it be known they were looking to make this version of Batman as someone who is older and wiser and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter.
Warner Brothers Greg Silverman said in a statement. “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”
For those of you may remember and who doesn’t, Affleck stared as “Daredevil” back in 2003. Affleck played “Matt Murdock” a blind attorney who represents the downtrodden by day and a masked vigilante stalking the dark streets of the city, a relentless avenger of justice.
Unfortunately for Affleck “Daredevil” was not well received at the box office. Will that happen again as Batman? At this time no one can say for sure. Affleck will join such actors as Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and Christian Bale to portray Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Affleck will have a lot to live up to after the success of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy starring Christian Bale.
The “Man of Steel” sequel opens in theaters worldwide July 17, 2015. Zack Snyder directing.
