The name Carol Ann Susi, may not be recognizable at first glance, but if you’re a fan of the television show “The Big Bang Theory” her voice is unforgettable. Unfortunately her voice has fallen silent.
Known for her role as the always heard, but never-seen Mrs. Wolowitz on “The Big Bang Theory”, died after a brief battle with cancer. The cancer was discovered when she went in for a medical procedure just a week and a half ago, her condition deteriorated quickly. Carol Ann Susi was just 62 years old.
CBS, Executive Producers Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro and Bill Prady and Warner Brothers Television released a statement.
“The Big Bang Theory family has lost a beloved member today with the passing of Carol Ann Susi, who hilariously and memorably voiced the role of Mrs. Wolowitz. Unseen by viewers, the Mrs. Wolowitz character became a bit of a mystery throughout the show’s eight seasons. What was not a mystery, however, was Carol Ann’s immense talent and comedic timing, which were on display during each unforgettable appearance. In addition to her talent, Carol Ann was a constant source of joy and kindness to all. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with her family during this time, and we will miss her greatly.”
Carol Ann Susi was born in Brooklyn, she studied acting in New York and in the 1970s moved to Los Angeles. She went on to appear in such television shows as “Seinfeld,” “Murphy Brown,” “Cheers,” “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” “Mad About You,” “Just Shoot Me” and “Six Feet Under.”
One of Carol’s more familiar roles was in “The Boyfriend,” the two-part episode from Seinfeld‘s third season. When George is at the unemployment office trying to sweet-talk his way into a benefits extension, he notices a photo on the desk of his case officer. Turns out it’s the woman’s very-available daughter (Susi) — and George sees an opportunity. The mother arranges a date between the two and in typical George fashion the date goes predictably poorly.
CBS and the producers of “The Big Bang Theory” have not said what they may do with the character of Mrs. Wolowitz. For me personally as a huge fan of the show itself I hope they give Carol Ann Susi character of Mrs. Wolowitz a proper farewell episode. To replace her with someone else wouldn’t feel right, they should have Howard’s mom pass away and let the characters of the show and the fans have a proper goodbye to a beloved character.
We here at Reggie’s Take send our thoughts and love to Carol Ann Susi’s family and to the cast and crew of “The Big Bang Theory”.
