James Gunn recently made an appearance on a Podcast this past week and talked about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and how the sequel will impact the Marvel Universe.
James Gunn while a guest on “Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend” Podcast began giving hints and clues as to the direction of “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” and one of the things Gunn said about the sequel is that it won’t be based on any storyline from the comic books. Not a huge surprise in my book considering the Movies haven’t exactly been faithful to the comics fully, as of yet.
When James Gunn was asked if there are any comics that inspired the sequel’s plot had this to say in response.
“It’s not really based on anything. The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it’ll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill’s father and who he is and what’s going on with that. We’ll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we’re going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole.”
James Gunn also discussed Marvel’s reaction to his early story line and direction for “Guardians of the Galaxy 2”.
“It’s different than what’s in the comic books. Peter Quill’s father is somebody different in the comics. So then when the movie came out, we got green-lit on the sequel right away. I went in and I sat down with those guys and I’m like, ‘Okay, here’s what I think the sequel should be.’ And they were like, ‘Oh, whoa. That’s risky, but okay.’ Now I’m going to turn over the story in a few short weeks and we’ll find out how well it works.”
It’s interesting to see where Gunn’s early thinking and direction is taking “Guardians of the Galaxy 2”, but at this early stage a lot can change between now and the time they begin actual filming.
Even if 90% of what Gunn said in the Podcast is true and makes it to the theaters you almost have to give him the benefit of the doubt at this time. After all “Guardians of the Galaxy” was the 2nd highest grossing movie of 2014.
“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017
