20th Century Fox has released a second trailer to director Roland Emmerich’s “Independence Day” sequel that looks to put the people of Earth in even greater danger then what they faced the first time around.
Independence Day took place in 1996 or at least a close representation of the world as it existed in then. Resurgence is set in an alternate-timeline of 2016 in order to make the movie’s main plot work. The technology on Earth has obviously advanced due to adopting what they found on the crashed alien ships left behind.
The moon has been colonized and a global military force, Earth Space Defense, has been preparing for the potential re-invasion ever since the conclusion of the first film only to be caught off guard and not as ready as they had hoped for when the alien invaders return with bigger ships and a new gravity-based super-weapon.
This latest trailer sets up what seems to be the main theme of the movie. The defense plans set up by the older original characters of the first film back in 1996 don’t seem to be enough of a resistance against the aliens who’ve obviously regrouped after licking their wounds. Leaving it to the younger, newer generation who’ve grown up in the aftermath of the first war to find a path to victory just as their parents’ did.
