Ready Player One is based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Cline and follows the character of Wade Watts who spends a lot of time in a virtual reality called the OASIS and after its first weekend in theaters, the box office returns are very real.
Ready Player One finished its first weekend in theater as the number one movie domestically earning $41.2 million, but when you include what it earned on Thursday before the weekend began its cumulative box office looks to be in the $53 million dollar range. Overseas Ready Player One took in another $128 million giving it a worldwide box office of about $181 million.
Ernest Cline and Zak Penn who wrote the screenplay for “Ready Player One” made some alterations to the story and characters, but maintained the spirit of the novel. Spielberg filmed a majority of the movie using performance-capture. Critics and fans seem to be in agreement with everyone having a favorable view of the movie.
Even though Ready Player One finished first at the box office its opening weekend, will it have the legs to sustain itself in theaters long enough to be considered successful? Only time will tell. It’s possible that Ready Player One could hold on to the top spot on its second weekend with only “A Quiet Place” and “Chappaquiddick” being its biggest competition.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s movie “Rampage” will open on “Ready Player One’s” third weekend and would most likely end any sort of box office dominance for Ready Player One, assuming it stays number one until then.
