Sony released a new Venom trailer as the studios first film in a planned shared universe without everyone’s favorite webslinger being a part of the fray.
It’s no secret that Venom is not part of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and I’m fine with that. Not being connected to a shared universe (at least for now) should allow Venom to break away from the current superhero troupe of world-ending stakes and just focus on the anti-hero, monster-movie element that Venom seems to be leaning towards.
Tom Hardy’s character of “Eddie Brock” is a journalist who investigates the Life Foundation run by Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) who’s acquired an alien symbiote. It should be noted that this incarnation of “Eddie Brock” is significantly different from the Eddie in the comic book and for good reasons. Sony is attempting to introduce the audience to the character without the added benefit of a Spider-Man in this particular universe.
To be honest I’m not the biggest follower of Venom in the comics and what I do know comes from what I’ve researched. Yes I did see Spider-Man 3’s version of Eddie Brock/Venom played by Topher Grace, but in the end I felt Spider-Man 3 should have gone a different direction with it’s villains.
After seeing this latest trailer Sony released today I can honestly say I’m 100% on board to see this movie. I have noticed that some fans of Venom are complaining and have stated they won’t be seeing this movie, but I think what some fans are having trouble wrapping their heads around is, how can you have a Venom movie and no Spider-Man?
Not being a huge Venom fan I can’t answer that the way I might like to, but it is just an adaptation of Venom created for the movies and even though it may not be the Venom movie you want to see it could easily end up being an excellent movie.
If you’ve watched the trailer more than once then you might of noticed this trailer has some great lines it. There were two in particular that stood out for me.
Venom: Eyes! Lungs! Pancreas! So many snacks, so little time!
Venom: We will eat both of your arms, and then both of your legs, and then we will eat your face right off your head. You will be this armless, legless, faceless thing, won’t you, going down the street like a turd in the wind!
Cast: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott
