After years of development Paramount has released the first trailer for Top Gun Maverick, that sees Tom Cruise returning to the Danger Zone as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
On Thursday, Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con in San Diego and treated fans to the first trailer of his long awaited sequel to his 1986 Top Gun movie. Top Gun Maverick also sees the return of Val Kilmer, reprising his role as “Iceman,” and Miles Teller who will play the grown-up son of “Goose” who was killed and played by Anthony Edwards.
Cruise, told the crowd in attendance at Comic-Con…
“To me, ‘Top Gun’ is about competition,” he continued. But this time, Maverick isn’t competing for rank or respect. He’s just trying to keep his job in the face of advanced aero technology, i.e. drones.”
This first trailer references everything classic about Top Gun. Cruise on a motorcycle, ripped guys wearing no shirts with six-pack abs and a F-14 Tomcat. In reality a Top Gun sequel is technically not needed and after watching the trailer I’m intrigued.
As fun as this trailer looks I am wondering why Paramount made the decision to release this first trailer eleven months before the movie is even set to open in theaters. Last year Godzilla: King of the Monsters released their first trailer at Comic-Con and during the next ten months the studio would release three more trailers before the movie opened. Hopefully Top Gun Maverick doesn’t suffer from such an early release of its first trailer.
Top Gun Maverick, was originally set to be released in 2019 but was pushed back to 2020. Top Gun Maverick fly’s into theaters on June 26, 2020.
Cast: Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris
