A new rumor suggests that Ewan McGregor has signed on to play Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi for a possible series on Disney’s streaming service, Disney Plus. UPDATE! Now Confirmed, McGregor returning!!
UPDATE!! – Deadline has now confirmed that Ewan McGregor is in talks to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new Disney Plus series. This will be the third Star Wars series slated for Disney’s streaming service after The Mandalorian and the Rogue One prequel series starring Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and K-2SO (Alan Tudyk). An official announcement should come at D23 in Anaheim, California next weekend.
My original Post below.
A lot of fans were hoping for a standalone Kenobi movie when Solo was out in theaters, but after Solo’s disappointing box office returns and high budget due to re-shooting a good majority of the film after bringing in Ron Howard to replace Lord and Miller, Disney decided to rethink their approach and scraped the stand alone movies, at least for the near future.
The website Cinelinx is reporting that Ewan McGregor isn’t just in talks, but has actually signed on to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in an upcoming Disney Plus series. To give Cinelinx the benefit of the doubt, at least for now, Ewan McGregor has expressed interest in returning to the role of Kenobi in the past and it would be a great way to further bolster Disney new streaming service.
It should also be noted that the website StarWarsNewsNet back in February of this year was also reporting that Ewan McGregor would be returning as Ob-Wan in a Disney Plus series.
Reggie’s Take:
On the surface I would like to think this report is true, but the realist or better put the skeptic in me is having a hard time believing Cinelinx. I know Disney and Lucasfilm love keeping secrets and keeping such news close to the chest until they are ready to make the announcement, but the fact that Cinelinx is not revealing from where or whom they got this news raises a red flag.
If I had my choice I would love to see Ewan McGregor as Kenobi in a standalone movie on the big screen, but if that’s not a possibility a six episode series on Disney Plus is definitely better then nothing. If Disney and Lucasfilm actually gave us six one-hour episodes that would be the equivalent to three, two-hour movies and I would be good with that.
As much as I want Ewan McGregor to return to the role of Kenobi, even for a Disney Plus series I have to take this latest rumor with a giant piece of salt. Anything is possible and Disney could confirm this at D23 next week, but I somehow doubt it.
