Disney has released a new trailer for Artemis Fowl the upcoming film adaptation based on the popular fantasy novels.
Written by Irish author Eoin Colfer, Artemis Fowl over the course of eight books is a 12-year-old protagonist, supervillain, a criminal mastermind with a penchant for thievery and if you’re a fan of the popular fantasy novels then you might be unhappy with Disney’s adaptation.
Artemis Fowl (Ferdia Shaw) must go on a noble mission to save his wealthy father after fantastical creatures kidnap him. It’s obvious after you watch the trailer that Disney has decided to soften the 12-year-old protagonist and send him down the more traditional “hero’s journey” in his first appearance on the big screen.
It will be interesting to see if fans of the fantasy sci-fi books buy into Disney version of taking the protagonist and making him a hero. If fans of the books do then Disney has a potential film franchise, but if not then Disney maybe the one looked at as the villain.
Artemis Fowl is directed by Kenneth Branagh and opens in theaters on May 29, 2020.
Cast: Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Josh McGuire, Nikesh Patel and Adrian Scarborough, Colin Farrell, Judi Dench
