James T. Kirk was born on March 22nd, 2233 (Stardate 1277.1), in Riverside, Iowa. He was raised there by his parents, George and Winona Kirk. Although born on Earth, Kirk for a time lived on Tarsus IV.
While living on the planet Tarsus IV during a food crisis that was starving the colony of eight thousand people. Governor Kodos, sympathetic to old eugenics philosophies, tried to save a portion of his colony by killing the four thousand colonists he deemed least desirable or able to survive. Kodos was unaware of the imminent arrival of relief ships. The thirteen-year-old Jim Kirk was one of only nine eyewitnesses to the massacre.
Kirk returned to Earth to start his training at Starfleet Academy in San Francisco. During command training, Kirk took the Kobayashi Maru scenario, a simulation used to evaluate a student’s reactions to a “no-win” battle and rescue situation. Kirk refused to accept his first two defeats and before his third attempt, Kirk reprogrammed the simulation computer, consequently becoming the only cadet in Academy history to beat the “no-win” scenario, and earning a commendation for original thinking.
Kirk was commissioned as a Starfleet officer with the serial number SC937-0176CEC. Upon graduating from the Academy, Kirk began service under Captain Garrovick as a lieutenant aboard the USS Farragut, serving as a tactical officer. At the age of 31 James T. Kirk was promoted to captain and assumed command of the Constitution-class starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701.
The Enterprise discovered the SS Botany Bay on stardate 3141.9. The vessel from the year 1996 carried a group of genetically-engineered Augments from Earth’s Eugenics Wars, kept alive in cryogenic freeze. Their leader, Khan Noonien Singh attempted to steal the starship before he was stopped by Kirk. Kirk exiled Khan and his people on planet Ceti Alpha V, where Khan would have a chance to “tame a world” without threatening others.
The USS Enterprise returned to Earth in 2270 after it’s historic five-year mission that began 2265. The five year mission resulted in Kirk’s promotion to rear admiral. Kirk recommended Willard Decker to replace him as Captain of the Enterprise after the ship underwent an extensive refit. Kirk took command of the Enterprise from Decker in order to stop the 20th century NASA space probe Voyager 6.
Enterprises success resulted in Decker merging with the V’Ger entity through the simulacrum of Ilia. Admiral Kirk kept his flag on the Enterprise, commanding her through the 2270s. Kirk retired from Starfleet briefly in 2281.
Kirk returned to Starfleet in 2284. Eager to be back in space, Kirk boarded the Enterprise, now commanded by Captain Spock, as an observer to a cadet training cruise. After a call from Dr. Carol Marcus, the Enterprise changed course to investigate a possible problem at Regula One space station, unaware of Khan’s escape from his exile on Ceti Alpha V.
The subsequent engagement with Kahn was tumultuous for Kirk, a meeting with his estranged son, David Marcus, and the death of his friend, Spock. After returning to Earth in 2285, Kirk and his senior officers steal the Enterprise from Spacedock in order to recover Spock’s body from the Genesis planet and to bring it, and his katra, to Vulcan.
After a three month exile on Vulcan, Kirk and the senior officers, including Spock, return to Earth to face charges of violating Starfleet General orders and regulations. Along the way a mysterious probe besieged Earth and communicated in such a way that Spock determined could only be answered by the extinct humpback whale. Kirk takes their Bird-of-Prey re-named the HMS Bounty back in time to 1986 San Francisco. With the help of biologist Dr. Gillian Taylor, Admiral Kirk is able to successfully obtained two humpback whales George and Gracie and return with them to 2286.
After saving Earth, all charges facing Admiral Kirk and his crew are dismissed with the exception of one, disobeying orders of a superior officer. Kirk is reduced in rank to Captain as punishment and given command of yet another Constitution-class starship, the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A.
In 2293, Captain Kirk and the Enterprise A are ordered to escort the Klingon Chancellor Gorkon to Earth for a peace conference. Federation and Klingon officials collaborate on an attack on Kronos One that appears to come from the Enterprise-A, and assassinated Gorkon. Kirk and McCoy are arrested by the Klingons, who tried and convicted them for the murder of Gorkon, sentencing them to the Rura Penthe penal asteroid.
Kirk and McCoy with help from the inside are able to make it out from under the shield preventing beaming. Eluding detection Spock takes the Enterprise-A into Klingon space rescuing Kirk and McCoy. After destroying General Chang and his prototype Bird of Prey, Kirk saves the Federation president from assassination at the historic Khitomer Conference. Following the success at the Khitomer Confrence the Enterprise-A is decommissioned, and Kirk retires permanently from Starfleet.
Shortly after retirement, Kirk joined his friends Montgomery Scott and Pavel Chekov as the honored guests on the maiden voyage of the Excelsior-class starship USS Enterprise-B. Soon after departure, the ship received a distress signal from two Whorfin-class ships transporting El Aurian refugees, trapped in an energy distortion. Kirk volunteers to modify the ship’s deflector relays and successfully enables the ship’s escape, but not before a burst of energy from the Nexus breached the secondary hull. Kirk was lost and presumed dead.
Discovered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-D the events of 2371 revealed Kirk had entered the Nexus, yet unaware of the passing of 78 years. Kirk agrees to leave the Nexus, to help Picard stop the deranged scientist Tolian Soran from destroying the Veridian system. Climbing along a precariously-balanced metal bridge in order to grab the control panel necessary to disable the missile that Soran would have used, the bridge subsequently falls down a steep cliff when its support beams break. His last words, spoken to Picard “It was… fun. Oh my…”
Captain Picard buried Captain Kirk in a simple stone cairn on a Veridian III mountain top.
