When Disney bought Lucasfilm and acquired Star Wars it also acquired Indiana Jones as well, but until now Disney did not have full legal rights to the entire franchise.
On Thursday it was announced that Paramount and Disney came to an agreement concerning the future of everyone’s favorite archaeologist, Indiana Jones.
Under the new agreement Disney acquires distribution and marketing rights to all future Indiana Jones films along with its current ownership of the rights that it secured when it purchased Lucasfilm.
Disney can now produce future Indiana Jones films as it sees fit. Paramount however will still be responsible for the distribution of the first four Indiana Jones films and will get to enjoy financial participation on any future Indiana Jones films that Disney releases.
At this time there is no official word on a fifth Indiana Jones film, but considering the amount Disney paid for Lucasfilm like Star Wars I doubt they will wait very long before moving ahead with some sort of project. Harrison Ford has made it known he is not opposed to returning to the character one more time.
