Star Wars Episode VII doesn’t open still for another sixteen months and Abrams, Lucasfilm and Disney haven’t let anything slip as to what we can expect, but if the latest rumor is true, then we may see a new design for the stormtroopers.
Tom Hodges a design artist somehow was given a glimpse of the new look stormtrooper from someone involved in the production of the movie. Mr. Hodges supposedly did not sign any sort of non discloser form since he was never on the actual set itself and from memory sketched out a drawing of the new look helmets the stormtroopers will supposedly be wearing in Episode VII.
After creating the sketch Hodges posted his drawing on Instagram, but later removed it. If his drawing is close to being accurate and he indeed got a glimpse of a new design then it closely resembles what Ralph McQuarrie drew for the original Star Wars trillogy concept art of a Stormtrooper.
See for yourself below and make your own conclusions.
I wouldn’t be totally surprised if they did make modifications as to the look of a lot of things, after all it will be thirty years since we last saw the galaxy far, far away according to the time frame that Lucasfilm and Disney released.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if they have gone back and used some of Ralph McQuarrie’s original concept art either. They have based the look of the new animated show “Star Wars Rebels” from Ralph McQuarrie’s art as well. If they have it maybe Disney and Lucasfilm’s way of updating Star Wars with out having to go any further then what was already once created for George Lucas in the 1970’s.
The biggest question is, will fans react well to such an overhaul design or lash out against it? We won’t know of course for sometime if this is true or not, the waiting continues.
Star Wars Episode VII comes to theaters December 18, 2015.
