Denzel Washington returns as Robert McCall, a retired agent turned hired gun in the first trailer for Sony Pictures, The Equalizer 2.
Director Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington both return for the duo’s first-ever sequel. The first Equalizer movie was released in 2014 earning $192.3 million worldwide while getting mixed reviews. In April of 2015 a sequel was confirmed by Sony, with Washington reprising his role.
Sony originally scheduled the movie for a September 29, 2017 release, that was later moved to September 14, 2018 and then again to August 3, 2018, before finally landing on its current July release.
Reggie’s Take:
I loved the first Equalizer movie and after watching the trailer for the second movie, Denzel looks even more comfortable in this violent, action packed, gritty action thriller.
As much as I loved the first movie and as amazing as this first trailer looks I hope Denzel’s first sequel does not look or feel the same when it comes to the story. Yes, he’s a hired gun and yes we will get plenty of the action we loved in the first movie, but what I don’t want to see is a beat for beat rehash of the story or plot from the first movie.
That fear aside, I some how doubt Denzel would have agreed to reprise the role of McCall if Equalizer 2 didn’t have something new and fresh for the character.
The Equalizer 2 hits theaters on July 20th.
Cast: Denzel Washington, Melissa Leo, Bill Pullman, Pedro Pascal, Jonathan Scarfe
The Equalizer 2 Synopsis:
Denzel Washington returns to one of his signature roles in the first sequel of his career. Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed – but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?
