Sony Pictures in a surprise move on Wednesday revealed production of a brand new Ghostbusters movie has secretly begun with the release of a teaser trailer.
Jason Reitman the son of director Ivan Reitman has co-written and is directing a new yet untitled Ghostbusters movie. Ivan Reitman has given his son’s idea a thumbs up, saying the concept his son had for a sequel had him “crying by the end of it, it was so emotional and funny.”
In case your wondering this new entry into the Ghostbusters franchise will be set within the same cinematic universe of the first two movies and will serve as a direct sequel to 1989’s Ghostbusters II.
Paul Feig’s 2016 female-led Ghostbusters movie that was intended as a reboot will be ignored. The movie starred Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones making only $229.1 million worldwide despite getting decent reviews and still holds a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Feig’s 2016 reboot had potential, but instead of trying to tell a good story it seemed the need to stop every ten minutes and give a nod to the original. For me personally I enjoyed the movie for what it was, but feel the movie should of been a continuation using the original actors in their original roles instead of having them make cameos as other characters.
As for who we might see in this new movie it’s still unclear which of the original cast members—if any—will return for what many are calling Ghostbusters 3. Ghostbusters 3 will take place in present day and as the teaser possibly suggests, Ecto 1 and the Ghostbusters have either not been seen or have been forced to hide for a number of years.
Even though casting news most likely won’t happen for sometime it would be very cool if Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver were to return in some capacity. Of course the late Harold Ramis will be missed.
No release date has been given other than summer of 2020. Who ya gonna call?
