Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment released the first full-length trailer for Minions: The Rise of Gru.
Minions: The Rise of Gru takes place in the 1970s and finds a 12-year-old Gru (Voiced by Steve Carell) with dreams of becoming a supervillain; it’s also the follow-up to 2015’s Minions that was set in 1968 that saw our titular characters looking for a new leader to follow. The Rise of Gru however does take place before the events of the Despicable Me movies.
While I’ve enjoyed the Despicable Me movies for what they are I was never wowed by the Minions movie in 2015. Does it have some funny moments? Sure, but I was never able to fully enjoy it as much.
The previous two movies in the franchise Minions (2015) and Despicable Me 3 (2017) both earned over a billion dollars at the box office something The Rise of Gru will probably have no issues in crossing. After having watched the trailer I do have higher hopes of enjoying this movie more then I did Minions.
Minions: The Rise of Gru opens in theaters on July 3rd.
