On Friday Universal Studios released the first trailer for F9, the ninth film in the main series as some familiar faces make their return.
Justin Lin, who directed Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6, returns to direct F9. Vin Diesel and the rest of the Fast and Furious cast of characters are all back including Dominic Toretto’s sister, Mia. Mia (Jordana Brewster) after not appearing in the eighth movie returns for F9 as well as Han (Sung Kang), who died in Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, is also back.
F9 is also introducing wrestler/actor, John Cena into the fold as Jakob, Dominic’s younger brother who is described as a thief, assassin and a high-performance driver that has been sent to kill Dominic by cyberterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron).
I realize the Fast and Furious Franchise has done extremely well for sometime now and even though I’ve seen a good majority of the films, although not all of them, I get why the franchise is very popular with the movie going audience.
I will admit that the Fast and Furious is not my favorite movie franchise out there and some of the action at times has made me roll my eyes. At the same time I understand it’s that eye rolling action that makes this franchise what it is and so appealing to a lot of fans, after all I really enjoyed Hobbs and Shaw and it was that same eye rolling action that made the movie fun.
I mention the “eye rolling action” only because of what I saw near the end of this particular trailer when Dominic jumps his car over the side of the cliff and while it’s falling some rope looked to catch onto part of another cliff causing the car to turn towards it. All I could do was literally roll my eyes. Even after re-watching it one or two more times all I could think was this is something I would expect to see in a Batman movie, but if you liked that scene then by all means enjoy.
I’m not saying the trailer looks bad or that the movie will be bad, it was just that one scene that really stood out to me, who knows maybe it will make sense with in the context of the movie.
Fast 9 speeds into theaters on May 22, 2020.
