A new behind the scenes video for The Mandalorian takes a look at new groundbreaking technology eliminating location shoots.
Industrial Light & Magic released a new video that gives the audience an inside look at how Jon Favreau and ILM are using new technology to create all the different worlds used during season one of the Mandalorian.
The actors performed in front of a 20′ high by 270-degree semicircular LED video wall and ceiling with a 75’-diameter performance space. Combined with practical set pieces along with digital extensions played on the screens surrounding the actors all edited in real-time while filming.
This allowed the Lucasfilm to create an illusion of larger environments during filming on a soundstage all the while able to control the environment in real-time for both exterior and interior shots. This new technology of blending practical with VFX all in camera will no doubt change how television shows like The Mandalorian, not to mention movies are filmed.
