Lightyear “To infinity and…”

Pixar has released its first trailer for Lightyear, a Toy Story spinoff focusing on Buzz Lightyear, the original Buzz, not the one from Toy Story.

Lightyear is set in the world of Toy Story, but as a sci-fi action movie about the character of Buzz Lightyear that’s not the toy. To put this in simpler terms Lightyear would be the movie Andy would have gone to the theaters to see and then afterwards asking his parents to buy him the Buzz Lightyear toy. If you followed all of that, great!

Just from watching the trailer, Lightyear looks like an epic sci-fi movie at its very core. With Buzz launching in a rocket, powered be a crystal energy that takes him around the sun without becoming toast.

Director, Angus MacLane hopes to give audiences the kind of sci-fi movie he grew up watching from 1977-91. MacLane, might have teased who the antagonist of this movie might be, saying… “If the core elements of what Buzz is were to be paid off correctly, you would want to make sure that he had a laser, you would probably want to make sure that he had rocket legs, and you’d probably want to make sure that at some point he had a recognizable antagonist. But of course, I’m not at liberty to say anything about anything at this time.”

Since this version of Buzz Lightyear is based on the character and not the toy Chris Evans will be providing the voice instead of Tim Allen. The first Toy Story movie was released in 1995 followed by three sequels over the next twenty-four years.

Lightyear is scheduled to hit theaters on June 17, 2022.
