The 13th Doctor Announced

by Reggie's Take

Peter Capaldi announced back in January of this year that he would no longer play the Doctor and its been rumored for sometime who might be handed the keys to the Tardis and now we know.

Incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall who’s replacing Steven Moffat decided not to stick with tradition and announced that Jodie Whittaker will become the 13th Doctor when she makes her first appearance in the 2017 Christmas special. Peter Capaldi’s Doctor began trying to regenerate during the 10th season finale, but was trying as hard as he could to keep it from happening.

Jodie Whittaker, has admitted the thought of taking on the iconic role is “a bit nerve-wracking,” but recognizes playing the Doctor comes with an unbelievable opportunity.

“To be asked to play the ultimate character, to get to play pretend in the truest form: this is why I wanted to be an actor in the first place. To be able to play someone who is literally reinvented on screen, with all the freedoms that brings: what an unbelievable opportunity. And added to that, to be the first woman in that role. It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you’re told you can and can’t be. It feels incredible.”

Whittaker wanted to reassure the fans of Doctor Who, who might have doubts if a woman can be the Doctor by saying.

“I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender. Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.”

Reggie’s Take:
For me personally I’m not a huge Doctor Who fan, but the episodes I have watched were very intriguing. The fact they went with a female over casting another male is perfectly fine with me.

Of course there will be those few out there who are still stuck somewhere in 1950’s who will have nothing but disparaging comments about the choice and they will just have to grow up.

Like any major casting change in a popular show like a Doctor Who, fans will just have to give Jodie Whittaker and new showrunner Chris Chibnall a chance to make the show and character their own and if they do i’m sure they will be rewarded.

Doctor Who will return to BBC America and BBC 1 at Christmas. Season 11 will arrive sometime in 2018
