The 93rd Academy Awards for 2021 are in the books as we now know the winners of Hollywood’s biggest night.
This year’s Oscars ceremony looked much different unlike any other year. Mank received more Oscar nominations than any other movie, but Nomadland won the Best Picture. In a year where the most anticipated award of the night is usually Best Picture, but tonight it was The Oscar for Actor in a Leading Role.
The late Chadwick Boseman had been winning most of the other major awards leading up to the Oscars and was the obvious favorite to win for his final role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. In anticipation of Boseman possibly winning posthumously the Academy put the category for Best Actor as the final award of the night. Instead, Anthony Hopkins for his role in The Father won and since Hopkins was not in attendance the Oscars ended on somewhat of an abrupt note.
The In Memoriam a solemn part of the Oscars every year was disappointing as many of the images of those Hollywood lost this past year went by so fast it was difficult to keep up with. I am not sure if it was a time constraint or planned that way, but felt it was the one glaring issue with Sunday nights broadcast.
